THE COLOURS THAT SURROUND US
The Colours That Surround Us.
If you look closely, the world is filled with the most epic colours, from the sunsets and sunrises to the flora and fauna, it surrounds us. This body of work by Tunku Khalsom speaks to just that, bright bold colour radiates off each piece drawing the viewer in.
Taking on concepts similar to Chihuly as inspiration, Khalsom creates movement and organic forms, letting the paint or ink be the guide. Soft merging hues and dynamic brushstrokes emulate the irregularity of nature. Capturing moments of pure bliss, she wants the viewer to experience and be overwhelmed by colour. An idea voiced by Chihuly himself.
Khalsom believes that colour has the ability to influence your mood, different shades having different effects. It’s said that looking at warm, bright colours such as pink and red releases the “feel good hormone” dopamine, improving our mood and attention. Certain bright colours make us feel energised, and other cooler hues have a calming effect.
The butterfly motif prevalent in the majority of her work is the universal symbol of change and personal growth and very much an important aspect of Khalsom's personal journey.
The unity of colour and form, paired with her signature hand cut and individually pinned paper butterflies, sees Khalsom’s work take flight.
